Start Here If Your Laptop Is Not Encrypted:
If your laptop is not Whole Disk encrypted take steps to encrypt your laptop or seek help from a third party such as the Campus Book Store and other similar retailers (Best Buy, Office Max, etc.). They offer this service for a reasonable fee if you are not comfortable doing it yourself. (The College of Nursing will not encrypt your laptop for you.)
- Please refer to How to Encrypt your Laptop for information on encrypting and what encryption program to use. (Complete the Whole disk Encryption Process)
- The IT department at the College of Nursing will verify your computer is appropriately encrypted: Students will have scheduled drop in dates;Faculty and Staff will schedule appointments by submitting a Trouble Ticket.
Please encrypt your computers prior to the scheduled drop-in dates.
If You Have Had Your Laptop Verified By CON IT In A Past Semester:
You must attest to having your laptop encrypted on a semester by semester basis. If you have had your laptop’s encryption verified by College of Nursing IT in a past semester and your laptop is still encrypted please read this information Encryption Training – CON Students then proceed to your Canvas Advising course to find your encryption quiz: Canvas

Mandatory Encryption Requirement:
The University of Utah Health Sciences has adopted a policy of using only encrypted devices for students, staff and faculty. We would like to thank you in advance for your help in meeting our required compliance with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services protections for patient information. We recognize the inconvenience, but this has been sanctioned by the U.S. Department of Health for all Health Sciences and is a mandatory requirement. The scope of this policy currently includes laptops.
Warning: UUHSC, University of Utah and the College of Nursing take no responsibility for damages, data loss or performance issues from enabling encryption. If you choose to enable encryption yourself, back up your laptop files before proceeding. If you do not feel comfortable following these steps consider taking your laptop to a third party Tech support for help.
